Largest Collection On The Globe of Todd Rundgren Audio Rarities

Greetings Audio Toddheads! Warren H. (Atlanta, GA. USA) here. Tony Rogers and I have transferred our entire audio collections over to my home in 2008. We (Tony & I) thought my circumstances (A 62 year old, single, IT specialist/Audio Editor guy in Atlanta with lots of Todd Rundgren history/archival collecting since 1972) would be ideal for taking over the 'Library' in all its glory. And, so an 'incorporation' of his and my colossal collections takes place! I now curate this ‘museum’. And I plan to share much of this, just as Tony did all these decades. And yes, I’m somewhat of a Todd Rundgren Historian. I have been 'following' Todd extensively (in all forms of media) ever since I saw (and met) him here at an Historic Show at Atlanta’s Fabulous Fox Theatre on November 8 1973. So I know 'enough'. Please note that I say share my enthusiasm. No buying or selling. Nor will a penny exchange hands. Never.
I want to say a big THANK YOU in advance to all of you who are going to help and have helped with this so far. I’ll do my best. Write me anytime. twarrenh@gmail.com
Just scroll down to the items listed below by period and click on any year to browse the collection.
We've also recently been working in collaboration with my friend Frank Bubnick and his well known vast quality collection (you can visit his list by clicking on his name). Some of his editing is unequaled anywhere.
And some late breaking neat news : I believe most of you are familiar with the JEMS group. A bunch of super collectors for many bands’ audience recordings (predominate though are Yes and Springsteen). Well known for their re-mastering prowess and quality. They’ve been in contact with me for a couple of years, and in December of last year offered me all their (originals) Todd Rundgren Collection. They just didn’t have the resources or the time for refining anything by Todd Rundgren. It just wasn’t on their timeline. I received all their cassettes (60) within a few weeks! Most of them are MASTER tapes from the original Taper. They will be sending me all their DATs and Reels at a later date. I will be listing all these recordings here, as I digitally transfer them. With this addition of the JEMS collection I believe these Todd Rundgren Archives are easily the largest collection on the planet.
How do we share you ask? Well, Just for what it's worth, we really don't do the 'snail mail trading' (by postal) much these days. So, if you would like me to share or trade any of this 'Catalog' with you, it would be more convenient/easiest to share in the form of on-line file transfer. Generally, in .flac format, compressed to .zip or .rar for smoother/faster quality exchange [depending upon the size of the audio file(s) we might be exchanging of course]. Hope that all makes sense. I can work with you on 'all that'. Again, write me, and then we'll come to an agreement of sorts. Please keep in mind, that anything that is 'Official', or 'Professionally Marketed', or still available for 'Retail' purchase is not of consideration. Nor is there any monetary means of transaction.
I do not have any rights to, and I am not open for sharing any material that may be listed below that has been commercially or officially released and is still available retail. (It may be listed below for collection listing purpose only). I do not take or give any money for a single item below either. I do not take away any proceeds that are due to Todd Rundgren, family, friends, business or supporting/associated musicians. If it is ROIO (recording of independent origin), then I'm open to share. Support the artist! Go buy his stuff where and whenever available! Speaking of which; an ultimate place to find/buy Todd's releases and imports & rarities is TRBAZAAR. Check it out! If Scott ain't got it, nobody does...just about! And of course many past official CD/DVD releases and proprietary Todd merchandise is readily available for ordering on-line at The Toddstore. So check them out for sure.
I like to give credit where credit is due too. So please forgive me if I do not credit the right persons involved in making these recordings available/possible for all these years.
I’ll start a ‘Credits’ list here below, and maintain it on down the road. Like to make sure all the folks involved are appreciated. For now, let me go ahead and thank some folks that have really been instrumental in these archives (no particular order): Tony Rogers (of course), Mike Armes, Jeff Gauss 'Weavil' (RIP), Frank Bubnick, Paul Russo, Hiroshi Kawauchi, Istvan Berzenczei, Sara Kritzer, Barry Beiseigel, Marc Linowitz, Rob 'Lockjaw' Levangie, Roger Steel, Mike Adrian, Gil Ireland-Ashley, Jim Farrell, Dale Michelsohn, Gary Urwin, Don B., Bob Stanislowski (RIP), Micheal B., Jon Risen, Jon Babcock, Mark Wilpolt, Tom Cannon, Lin Sprague, Joe Franks, Chris 'Razz', Geoff (& Rick) Laurenzo, Ted Moon, Richard Roys, Storm Hunter, Moz (Mike), Sohta Fujito, David Skye, Allen Law, Matt Walsh, Kevin Lewis, Doug Ford, Dave Knife, JEMS, Jared Houser, Gene Poole, 'Elegymart', Gail Artsgard, Victor Baissait, Connor Payne and players to be named later. Special thanks to Roger Linder for providing this page space for us for decades. Let's Rock!
BTW, I call this group of people 'My Cartel'. However, I have given the group a Media name: F451 Media (as in 451 Farenheit). It is not a brand name, for nothing of mine is for sale or has been sold EVER. It is a logo for these dedicated Todd Rundgren Collectors , which most of been doing this since the early 90s (and even earler). Our logo is:

Track List:CD ONE: AMBIENCE. BUFFALO GRASS. I HATE MY FRICKIN ISP. BLACK MARIA. SOUL BROTHER. MAMMON. FASCIST CHRIST. I SAW THE LIGHT. TEMPORARY SANITY. BLACK AND WHITE. LUNATIC FRINGE. CD TWO: NO 1 LOWEST COMMON DENOMINATOR. DRIVE. SLUT. WHEN THE WALLS CAME DOWN. ONE WORLD. HAWKING. WORLDWIDE EPIPHANY. LOVE OF THE COMMON MAN (SOLO). AMBIENCE
Note:Well if you want a show from this tour…the first one out and loaded with mistakes..you can tell the band and Todd are uncertain and yes, it’s fascinating as hell....right off the bat, Buffalo Grass and the echo "already gones" are gone onto a different melody that belongs not in this tune..Get used to JM's laid back groove-solid as a rock but largely unexcitable also....TL has a big bass sound here and thru the tour there was an issue about the stick...when it was used, the bass would disappear, in fact he was hardly audible with it anywhere on the tour..in general, Todd's gtr is buried a good bit in the mix...shaky dynamics/accents abound--ISP is nice pace but is a mess -TL misses notes, the ending is blown and they meander along for a few bars post..Jesse is the one bright spot of the show, his solo on SB is astounding...ala his solos in GO on Liars tour...Mammon/FC is stick-ville so adjust your EQs accordingly (on the whole tour)...major screw up on FC Todd’s vocals-sounds like he’s too busy making sure everyone else is doing what they should...he musta had a headache at the end of this night...Fascist Christ shoulda been a bit more funky…Temporary Insanity is very fast..Todd tries to slow it down but can only vary so much...'all Americans now claim to be Canadian when they travel abroad" (WTF?)B & W has very odd dynamics and continues throughout the tour...it just never really felt right-odd dynamics...Drive has a big screw up at the start which requires a restart, and the words are off (really horrendous version)Slut works well, so do the 2 covers..After all this stuff, Hawking is actually quite nice-mostly a great Todd performance vocally...WWE is too fast and I don’t think Todd in all 7 shows ever could complete the end rap...too fast..LOTCM is nice and his voice carries it...great to start and great if you were there but it really is a warm up gig and if you want a show or 2 from this tour, this is not it....the recording is boss-very very fine stuff, but the performance sounds mostly slapped together and it gets way better as the tour goes on, trust me on that one....great job by Canadian traveler of all modes of transport, Mr. Jon Babcock…Todd taper extraordinaire.~ Tony

Note:Stop number 2 for JB and Todd and the boys and this road copy I have will be replaced due to a bit of digital noise on the transfer but it doesn’t mar the CD to listen to...as for the performance, it is getting better than Vancouver but prob 60% of where it belongs..it is very bass heavy and there exists the big EQ diff depending whether TL has his stick on...band is still a bit tentative yet-it does change in Winnipeg and the sound of the stick is the best by far in Montreal of all of these shows, Todd’s gtr is at times a bit low in the pa mix---as with all but mon, JB had these mics away from the yap in a sweet spot...particulars: Buffalo Grass-house adjusting the PA during the tune; ISP is pretty great version...Black Maria- wish Todd here was up vol some, JM almost stops during solo..Sounds lost for a second, a strange version here, TL makes a goofball mishit at last chord of song...Todd makes a joke 'last time I was in Calgary, I was in a bull riding contest’....SB-tremendous solo by JG, nice version; mammon-bass disappears, Jesse has trouble with chords I spots (very unusual), more probs with FC, rough version, breakdown not usual for old time religion, weird accents..ISTL- dual lead mostly on (it was on every nite I’ve heard), TS- not too bad, Todd gtr still low vol but audible, "Lets throw the dial on the way back machine)...B&W-this is the oddest start you’ll ever hear to this one, mess up bug goes from TL to JG-Jesse plays some tremendous lines...WALLS-bass back on, rougher than Vancouver dyslexic, Todd says "that’s why this bootleg will be worth so much more!"..No 1 Lowest nice leads but still low vol, a slight bit fast, not wobbly enough...slut-ragged but right, very rough patch on the extra bars in 2 laces of LF..Hawking does not reach the heights on other nites and there is a part where Todd sings flat (very strange, very uncommon)...WWE feels great this night.....as I said before, JB should be doing another version of this for us soon, so hang in there..Not quite in prime form with the band but getting there quickly...Thanks again to King Jonathan for this peek!~ Tony

Note:Show number 3. Big strides this nite, in fact, for those of you looking to get the good/great shows, this one is the last so-called warm ups. All good after this one...Jon told me about this venue=he said it was a beautiful place but that it had another band playing in the basement of the joint at a place called (Guess...the Velvet Underground.....I guess it’s so far from the rest of the world, Lou hasn’t heard about it and sued 'em yet)..Long way to travel...particulars: no already gone back vocs on Buffalo Grass; momentum is lacking at the first tune somewhat, Todd gtr is low as usual, premature ending for ISP but feel is nice, after BM you notice what a tame crowd (I guess the variety of weed in Edmonton that’s preferred is not sativa....) still gtr of Todd’s is blazing but buried still somewhat..Todd tries to "drown out whatever is next-door" on soul brother which works well this night, great solo by JG, mammon (the road version has a few hiccups here), pretty well played FC-screwed up leads a bunch of 'em and a missed ending, extra jamming cuts both ways but is prob the worst version of this on TNE tour. ISTL, did not start together, dual lead spot on; B&W-ok-pretty nice one-one of tours better versions, after NO1, Todd asks someone in the crowd "loud enough for you-are your ears ringing yet?", Drive is too fast, whereas Slut is really super..Todd then gets stooopid on the crowd...”Edmonton...Edmonton...is this town named after Edmund O' Brien? You know, from the original DOA)...pretty amazing version of Hawking....one of better ones?? Very nice one....WWE is real fast this night, so fast that Todd misses big chunks of the rap, but end is real nice (come on come, etc) LOTCM- the PA is off when come back on but voice shot, but the emotional exchange takes place big time...another winner from King Jon..Next stop on, they rule!~ Tony

Note:Manitoba time, Neil Young’s place, this is show #4 and we're in the money from here on out...what this means is that the shows are now pretty glitch-free and the performances are super..This show Todd’s gtr is louder than the others (and stays that way the rest of the tour for the most part)...this is a pretty great show and they get better and better still...JB did lots of ambience on this one....particles (ha): still no back on already gone of b grass. ISP kicks ass, great rock sound, tempo super-one of best if not the best ISP here, great vibes to BM, TL plays nice feels/riffs w/o too busy, great Todd gtr (of course), very creative leads by Todd, nice 16ths pattern on snare against the beat by JM to create great needed tension/release..Afterwards "we feel kind of loose here. What is this? When we got here they were advertising tomorrow nights show! The voice of deep purple", then Jesse adds the obligatory smoke on the water riff...Todd then chimes in "no respect...”SB-one of best again, jesses solo has to be heard to be believed...best stick sound at this point (but Montreal is best)best version at that point of Mammon, Todd takes chances on chancy on his solos on FC and it pays in droves for the stretch out scene, JM really playing out a bit polyrhythmically (nice to see/hear) ("we're going to satisfy your sweet tooth (ISTL) then back to your meat tooth") Temp Sanity is too fast but it’s here that I realize that the confidence is starting to show out loud..Some crackles w/ sound system (prob the stick) middle lead missing...bass sound is pretty under control this show...afterwards Todd remarks himself and seems to agree with me "pretty good night for us because we're all ending the same place (see Edmonton, Calgary, etc)-it took us half the tour..as soon as we'll get good at it, the tour will be over' again his nod to our little scene "I offer you invaluable bootlegging opportunities!" you know, I’ve waited years to hear him have this mindset, so I’m glad he now knows the value of what we do and tips his cap...."did you hear the way he screwed that up?..the wires will be burning" or here......love it.....B&W-real feel TL is more a problem than JM this night on this tune..Great solo, I mean great by TR in middle...he’s always the best when he strays off the beaten path and takes chances...TR again talks about bootleggers with cell phone recorders...and that he’d never recorded this tune before (LF) that he knew of. Decent, nice, not the best version of LF ...great version of No1 leaving me wanting Todd to solo forever...drive is super and by now this show is turning out to be a monster..Slut is super (yes I think the best version of the tour)...JG does a slide gtr! Lead this night on Walls (btw you guys know this is a "call" tune from modern Romans LP)...and then as if we needed any more to convince us, Hawking takes us on an interplanetary trip..Jazzy, breathy, strolling a bit more than usual but just wondrous...JM plays this like no other drummer so far (sorry other guys but JM is on a diff level with anyone else who’s played this so far on drums)-he’s just rhythm itself for real....exquisite...the tune almost feels stax-like or Memphis influenced/Aretha..Just...you have to hear it...all timer version.....WWE brisk and confident....Todd’s vocals are just magnificent...LOTCM ender....Todd to the crowd "you’re...you’re sweet like Canadian bear meat!" sweet it is, my friends, sweet it is..Thanks King Jon for the first of 4 killer classics-!! Show number 4 but killer #1 of next 4.~ Tony

Note:Show 5 and number 2 of the great ones. This one in a way is better than Montreal, so it’s kind of a toss up there. Depends on what you like. I was told by Jon that he believed that TL played no stick this night and the recordings sound like it. The only track to me that changes in timber radically as the other shows (yes even Montreal which has the best stick sound of all the recordings) is WWE, maybe...you decide and get back to me folks...this is a great show and belongs in any Todd collections...the mix is fine dandy incl Todd being up on gtr..2 days off preceded this. And one other thing, JM is a loud sucker-he hits the snare as hard as anyone I’ve ever heard live- really pops it...cool as hell Particulars: BG-still not much on backgrounds...you know this bothers me cause I hated it that the liars band didn’t sing "cat claw across my heart" on the last verse...gives the song some momentum..I know...I should get a life...anyhow...Todd sounds a bit ragged for 2 days off but its right, nice rock raspiness...TL also very busy..Todd really extends on this opening solo at the end...post ISP rap "last time I was Ottawa I was stung by your beauty" Then the time machine rap and a sexual metaphor....BM-first time aware of delay which would be on the Todd voc most of night..Cool...powerful version..."everything’s either pre or post 9/11"(time machine reference)...”this is a post 9/11 tune" after SB, then TR makes an interesting remark about religion...you need to hear it.....Jesse is a bit low on Mammon...on FC, Todd rips to shreds and JM and TL propel him to go out and go out he does..Awesome stuff...TR sounds happy on ISTL and nails (as he did every night-playing w/ Easton, you see) the 2x lead w/ JG....Todd talks about tony dying to get his stick out...so maybe JB is right...because metaphorically it’s a larger piece..Someone tells TR he has the "Belew guitar" to TRs puzzlement. LF is a monster band wise -tight as a rubber band snapping this night...wicked!, super no1 follows..JM particularly plays out, hot as hell...great rhythmic interplay there...slight mix up on end of Drive where it doesn’t stop and start again...Jesse plays a tremendous wahwah solo on One World that gets a rousing hand from the crowd (many were musicians no doubt....)Todd really channeling at the end of Walls ala Liar last year..Scream to purge the craziness...one world is nice at this slower pace...hawking may be the best version also...there are quite a few great ones you’ll have to decide...they are all just brill w/ me I think its JMs feel that makes it so powerful...at end of WWE, you know its superior show period..No one has to tell you so I’ll shut up now...Thanks to Capt. Jon Jon for giving us these gems. ~ Tony

Note:Good audience recording that we just didn’t have listed here for some reason. This came to me as just one big track (.wav). And I don’t know who to give credit for this fine recording, but it’s a great short set from what was then being billed as ‘Todd Rundgren & The Tony Levin Band’. When I saw this Tour, I remember the strange bass that Tony played…cross between a sitar and a bass, that he called a ‘stick’.
The Players:
Todd - guitar, vocals
Jesse Gress - guitar
Tony Levin - bass('stick')
Jerry Marotta - drums

Note:Show 6- great show 3 and homey in attendance...and I was dancing in my head...small place very small crowd 150-200? But crowd there was really into it...not much to say other Todd really playing out and this show is the best sound wise with the stick being played...it just did not project or cut through well at the others...Particulars: BG-real big low end..ISP- Todd urges JM faster...as result tempo jumps...BM-raging solos-brutal...super great stuff-best one of tour...I love the beg and version of SB here...I realized at the show that Todd sang all the words this tour to someone’s always keeping score...etc..Awesome solos again, groovy JM scene...T sanity we get some great loud stick for change...Todd is on this night as B & W smokes and this would also be best of the tour...TR talks about LF before and someone guesses "poonteen" as the Canadian artist who wrote it (TC and RR)..Todd really wigs out on No1 Lowest...going for it...absolute bliss for me...Todd announces the band and calls JM a slab of concrete for being rock I mean rock solid and calls Jesse the ying to his yang..TL the foundation...may also be the best Drive as well.....nice beg to it...Todd talks about STDS before slut and gives the equal opp debaser speech...”lets go back to the muck and do it old school, ok??"..At the end Todd says may be a slut and she looks like shit to me". I played it back 3 times, I swear....it’s funny string change time...racing to change the strings, Jesse and his roadie who evidently fell asleep and missed the first one going..We get the aristocrats story from Todd, you have to hear it (know the movie?) Todd then announces that’s the name of his band...walls is a hackfest...good thing...all hacking away very much more percussively than the usual nite...hacky solo by JG...all good. End of One World perfecto...sounds like utopia playing it almost....Hawking is stupefyingly great again...just a flower beauty will catch you off guard here..A great one...Todd wisely sings another lower interval on "when god....kissed me" last verse...so great can’t pick one...other than to say JM is the drummer for this song. Period.....power power on WWE (I think it the best)...and a great mellow LOTCM closes out a special nite for me for sure...another JB gem...Did I say I liked Ottawa as well as this, I don’t think so but its close....god what great stuff here.~ Tony

Note:Last show. Number 7. Best/greatest of all. Biggest crowd. Just a classic show all around. You need this. Essential. I don’t know what else to say other than it is a classic. Particulars: Todd gtr low on Buffalo Grass but up by ISP which is just a mother this nite. Stones City. It rocks out. "Were going to love you all nite long including shinsu shinsu"...confidence this night is at an all time high and has been growing since Winnipeg. "Ingram in the house" so was Moe Berg. Then TR says that "we are the only ones to see this lineup and pray to what you pray that it will continue” great jazzy solo by JG on SB...very intense Mammon and FC this night, they are killers-prob the best 1/2 of these both together on the tour-Todd’s vocals just scowl...even JG sings Kaz's odd harmony on the last "even though you have no faith it in"- (in the get a life dept: at the end of the tune, when will someone finally cover the part "you want to rub my face in it" whilst Todd sings "save Mammon", like it is on the record..Another puzzlement to me...I know...don’t say it.......) btw-totally diff solos by Todd on FC really improve...really nice wicked...2 sound system crackles on ISTL...Todd talks of old age and stooping...Todd continues to play off the top of his head on b and w..Out there...I love it I love it..."sticking with our paranoid theme" -Todd delivers the "house" description of the band...see my review ...splendid drive...”into the bog everyone" before Slut...Todd spews out the lyrics of walls like venom...it’s now crystal clear as to why he chose it..."I don’t think there are any terrorists.... and there aint no yanks..Just corporate criminals playing with tanks"...right on!! Crowd a bit baffled but with one world, they jump to their feet on cue....hawking very nice again but not Montreal or Ottawa...WWE reigns supreme...killer version, high emotion...then LOTCM..And then he was gone after a very almost speechless moment...”thank you". Thank you so much" in a very almost mumbling tone and then he said something slightly off mic that sounds French?? You tell me...but ILL tell you this is a stone cold classic Todd show and if you get one, get this one. What a great blessing it was to have JB do this tour. the dedication it shows is rare and whether or not it is ever formally recognized as at least a component to the modern lifeblood of an artist, which it is maybe to other artists (i.e., jamsters) more than Todd, for the first time he acknowledged it more than once on this tour and that’s enough for me to know that I think he knows how important it is to those who couldn’t be here...JB really out-did himself on this tour and we bow in honor, thank you for these gifts...Bliss Canadian Mist...essential…~ Tony

Track List:HELLO AGAIN.LET'S GO.SHAKE IT UP.BEST FRIEND'S GIRL.CANDY O.I SAW THE LIGHT.WARM.DANGEROUS TYPE.MOVING IN STEREO.ALL MIXED UP.BLACK MARIA.MORE.(CUTS SLIGHTLY) YOU MIGHT THINK.INTROS.DRIVE.BANG THE DRUM.YOU'RE ALL I GOT.BYE BYE LOVE.NOT TONIGHT.JUST WHAT I WANTED.OPEN MY EYES.GOOD TIMES ROLL.
Note:This I took from a Bootleg Video of the show (which is very good by the Way). I pulled the Audio (which was good to begin with) and did some 'area beautification' to it. It came out pretty exceptional, except; The Bass (Kaz) isn't as strong as I'd like (But the Drums are?!). We don't have a lot of 2006 New Cars Shows, so this is ESSENTIAL, because they're on fire here! And this is the only Show we have where they do their New Material ~ Warren
