JOV's upbeat message and anthemic quality make it one of Todd's best and most popular songs, especially live. I love it because of it's great, strong melody. The harmony is all within the tonic key (B in this transcription and all live versions I've heard, but C in the original studio version from AWATS) except for the momentary bVII chord (A) at "You may think that I'm a fool." However, Todd has kept the harmonic rhythm busy, with 2 or 3 chord changes per bar. This helps propel the song and makes opportunities for lots of counter melodies in the instrumental backing. The melody sometimes adds (slightly) dissonant notes to the basic chord changes in a way that makes the music sound quite full. For instance, in the "You may think that I'm a fool" line, he sings an aggressive D# note while playing an A major chord, effectively adding a sharp 4th to the harmony, a note that I don't hear any instrument play at that point. The guitar solo is nicely developed - it starts off playing the main melody, then improvises for a bit in a strictly major tonality, then gets progressively bluesier and more intense. When you see something like "(*2)", see the corresponding note at the bottom. The letter to the left of the slash in chord names like "A/D" refers to a triad, and the letter to the right refers to the bass note only. The number directly to the left of the chord diagram is the position on the guitar neck (or closest fret). "x" along the top means mute or deaden that string, "o" means let it ring open. If you see any mistakes, or have any corrections or alternate ways of playing any of my transcriptions, I'd love to hear from you.
