This song is almost totally composed of what I call "Todd chords", that is, simple major and minor triads over various diatonic (in the key) bass notes. This very pianistic approach is hard to mimic on guitar, except in certain keys that give you access to lots of open strings (just ask another master of this technique, Pete Townsend, why so many Who songs are in the keys of A, E, and D!) That's why I've transposed this transcription down a half-step to A, rather than the record's Bb. This gives me the chance to play the song's distinctive throbbing bass line on the open A and E strings. It also has the added side benefit of putting it in a lower key, making it easier (for me) to sing, although I have to admit that it's almost impossible for me to sing and play it simultaneously... but I'm working on it. If you want to play along with the record, use a capo at the first fret. While making this tab I was torn between making it close to what Todd plays and making it easily playable (I understand now why I've never heard him do it live.) If you find the tab hard to decipher, you can leave out some of the passing chords, but you will lose the effect of the recorded version. I haven't found many short cuts for this song. When you see something like "(*2)", see the corresponding note at the bottom. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Hideaway (*1: Intro) (*2) [Bass note continues until change is indicated.] D/E A/D D E I've been watching how you dance, Watching how you smile [bass changes to A...] D E D A E D A E/A Watching how you carry yourself around in a crowd D A E B A E And watching what you say You've got something that's a secret to the average eye You've been saving something nobody's seen until now In a hideaway (*3) A/D E/D D E/A I'm not trying to invade your privacy A/D E/D D C#m There are things you have a right to hide D E F#m E D D/E (or Esus4) E But it's oh so cold Standing on the outside (*4, Chorus) D E F#m E D E/A Will you take me to your secret hideaway D E F#m E D E/A I won't tell nobody where I'm going D E F#m E D C#m Won't you tell me that we're leaving right away E/A B/A A B/A For the heart of your hide-a-way (*5) Esus4/D E/D Esus4/D E/D Everybody's looking for a heaven on earth Esus4/C# E/C# Esus4/C# E/C# A slice of paradise where nobody gets hurt Am/C C Am/C C Someone to put the pieces back together again Bm7 B When your daydreams die Are you trying to get a message through the air to me? However, I think they are distracting and difficult to play and sing simultaneously, so I play them down at the nut end of the neck. There is a constant open D string bass note from the word "watching" until the word "crowd", where the bass note changes to an open A string. ...watching how you dance, watching how you smile... The letter to the left of the slash in chord names like "A/D" refers to a triad, and the letter to the right refers to the bass note only. The number directly to the left of the chord diagram is the position on the guitar neck (or closest fret). "x" along the top means mute or deaden that string, "o" means let it ring open. The horizontal dashes in the tablature diagram usually correspond to 8th notes unless otherwise indicated. In some places I've shortened the measure to 4 dashes if there's nothing happening there and I need to conserve space on the page. In other places I've added a space between the dashes in order to indicate frets higher than the 9th. The song remains in 4/4 time throughout. If you see any mistakes, or have any corrections or alternate ways of playing any of my tabs, I'd love to hear from you.
